The National Autism Plan for Children is the completion of the work of the National Initiative: Autism Screening and Assessment. The NIASA core group of experts was drawn from a wide range of disciplines and areas of expertise: special acknowledgement must be given to the West Midlands Regional Partnership /West Midlands Identification Working Party whose principles (English 2002) were adapted to provide the basis for the ASD provision and services guidelines in Chapter 3. Key recommendations include a clear timeframe for assessment, a call for urgent training of professionals in knowledge and awareness of autism spectrum disorders, the active involvement of families in care planning and procedures, better multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working, and the setting up of national networks. The report's appendices contain useful tools and reference materials.
